“I’ve spent a fair bit of time in Newport, Thursday night racing in the J24 fleet. It will be different in the AC45, but Newport offers a great race course with lots of underwater obstacles. It is also shifty and puffy, with plenty of current, a lot like Plymouth.”—Artemis Racing skipper Terry Hutchinson
“Newport will be a fantastic event, and it will be great to see the America’s Cup back in town. We’re going there to try and wrap up the season. That’s been our goal and it’s obviously something we’d like to win.”—ORACLE TEAM USA helmsman Jimmy Spithill
"It would have been hard to plan a more appropriate welcome for the ship carrying all of the America’s Cup World Series cargo. Hundreds and hundreds of sailboats were participating in various events around Southern Narragansett Bay. A dozen former America’s Cup 12 Metre yachts sailing around the Newport bridge, over 100 entries in the New York Yacht Club Annual Regatta, Sail Newport adults out taking sailing lessons, kids of all ages and from all parts of southern New England participating in Optimist clinics. The sailing community is fully engaged and fully excited for the World Series and all of the fabulous events surrounding it."
- Brad Read, Chairman of the Local Organizing Committee
“The Golden Gate Bridge is as iconic as the Statue of Liberty is to New York or the Opera House is to Sydney. The difference is that if you wrote the spec for a perfect sailing venue you’d end up with San Francisco Bay. The wind is funneled in the gap spanned by the Bridge and the direction is parallel to the shore so that the racing is right in front of the fans”—Russell Coutts, CEO, ORACLE TEAM USA
A circuit that travels the globe, the movement of the AC World Series is made possible by the 125 containers that store every bit and bob. From desks and chairs to sail repair equipment to workshops to the AC45s themselves, the containers also do double duty as the event and team bases for the duration of the competition.
“It’s a long way between now and 2013, the competition out here is formidable. While we’ll savour these 2 minutes the next race will be equally hard and we just keep having to fight the fight.”—Terry Hutchinson, skipper Artemis Racing upon winning AC World Series Venice Match Racing Final
