ORACLE TEAM USA’s skipper Jimmy Spithill and Dirk Kramers from the team’s Design Executive swapped wings on raceboats for wings on racecars, visiting the IZOD IndyCar season finale at Fontana near Los Angeles.
Both got a ride on Fontana’s oval circuit in an IndyCar open-wheel two seater with US motorsports legend Mario Andretti, one of only two drivers to have won IndyCar, Formula 1, Sportscar and NASCAR titles.
‘The grip was awesome,” said Spithill. “You just didn’t believe that it would make the turn when the you saw the wall coming up.”
Spithill hooked-up the San Francisco Bay Area’s J R Hildebrand of the National Guard Panther Racing team, having taken the Sausalito man racing on his AC45 during August’s America’s Cup World Series in San Francisco.
Acquiantances with Target Chip Ganassi Racing team drivers and past IndyCar champions Scott Dixon and Dario Franchitti, recent visitors to ORACLE TEAM USA’s Pier 80 in San Francisco.
All three drivers are avid sailing fans. Dixon finished on the podium for the 15 race series in 3rd overall. Franchitti was 7th overall and Hildebrand 11th overall in the 35 driver field.
