ORACLE TEAM USA sailor Tom Slingsby has been named the Australia Athlete of the Year for his dominating gold medal performance in the Laser class at the London Olympics.
In this interview, Slingsby says his first sport was tennis, not sailing, and that at first he wasn’t very comfortable being on the water.
“I remember for me the hardest part was getting out there the first day…” he said. “Apparently I was crying, but soon the tears turned to big smiles and within a couple of days I was loving it.”
Slingsby’s medal was Australia’s first individual gold medal in London in the 2012 Olympic Games.

“I’ve been sailing with ‘Goobs’ (crew Iain Jensen) now for four years and everyone said we were the favourites and don’t let the country down, but we’ve done the job and we’ve done Australia proud. It’s more a relief than anything. We’ve worked so hard for so long for this.” - Nathan Outteridge, 49er class, on winning Gold medal before Wednesday’s Medal Race

“Who would be feeling better in the world right now? No one would. I’ve worked for 12 years to get there. I put everything I had into it and I’ve done it. I couldn’t be happier.” - Tom Slingsby, Laser class on winning Gold medal
